What a match prediction actually is
A match prediction is a probability statement about a specific outcome, with the underlying evidence visible. It is not a tip. It is not a guarantee. It is a frame: “given the venue, the squads, the conditions and the role mix, here is the most likely shape of the match and the slots that benefit from it.”
A clean prediction has four parts
Most likely outcome, expected total, slot-by-slot implication, and a re-check note for after the toss. If a published prediction has fewer than four parts, treat it as commentary, not analysis.
Six signals we lean on
We watch six signals when we frame a prediction. Some are pre-match; some only resolve after the toss. Below is the list, with a short note on why each one matters.
Venue notebook
Average first-innings score and second-innings score; dew factor; boundary size.
Squad availability
Injuries, role changes and last-minute substitutions. Always re-check inside 30 minutes of the toss.
Recent form (last 5 matches)
Strike rate, economy, dot-ball percentage. Trend, not last-match.
Head-to-head venue record
Same venue, same role, last 2–3 meetings. Sample size is small; treat as a flag.
Pitch and weather
Surface type, expected turn, dew forecast. Combine with venue notebook.
Toss + batting order
Once confirmed, re-rank anchors and death bowlers. Most predictions get sharper after toss.

How we publish verification status
Every published prediction carries a status flag. “Provisional” means likely correct, not yet independently confirmed. “Verified” means we have re-checked it on the operator’s official page or the broadcaster’s match note. “Watch” means the underlying fact is in flux and we expect to re-check it before lock.

What changes after the toss
The single biggest prediction update happens after the toss. The captain flip is the obvious one — batting first vs. second changes the captain frame in most venues. The less obvious one is the bowler mix: if the surface slows and the chase is on, the death-overs spinner gains value while the third seamer loses it. Re-rank anchors and bowlers; do not touch the openers unless the role changes.

Re-rank anchors to 3→4 if the surface slows. Move the death-overs spinner up; consider dropping the third seamer.

Common prediction mistakes
Most prediction mistakes fall into one of three buckets: (a) over-weighting the most recent match, (b) ignoring the venue notebook, or (c) under-using the post-toss window. Each one is fixable in 30 seconds if you are looking for it.
Why is the last match often misleading?
It is one data point. A role change, a venue change or a batting-order shift can make the most recent match unrepresentative. Use it as a confirmation signal, not a primary driver.
How often should a prediction be updated?
Any time an underlying fact changes — squad, toss, venue or weather. The status flag flips to “Verified” only after a re-check.
Can you publish a win-rate?
No. A prediction is a frame, not a tip. Win-rate statistics require a settled methodology and a long enough history that the desk does not yet have.

Skip a prediction when the underlying inputs are missing or unreliable: a venue with fewer than 5 recent matches, a squad with more than 2 injury watches, or a pitch note that contradicts the curator’s prior 5 matches. The desk would rather publish “insufficient evidence” than a confident prediction on weak inputs.

Why we do not publish a probability per player
A probability per player is a marketing artefact: it sounds precise but it requires a settled methodology and a long history. The desk has neither; publishing one would mean inventing figures we cannot defend. The desk publishes slot-by-slot frames instead — a captain frame, a bowler mix, an anchor re-rank. The frames are useful; the per-player probabilities are not.

How the desk stays honest
The desk stays honest by publishing the frame, not the verdict; by dating every guide; by flipping status flags when an underlying fact changes; and by logging every correction in the open correction log. A prediction page that does not say what it does not know is not honest; the desk’s pages always say what they do not know.
