A player’s fantasy value is the product of role, form and opportunity. This page organises players by role, with an opportunity index that weighs expected batting position, overs phase and fielding involvement. It is a working board, not a tip sheet.

Players by role

Below is the desk’s default role board. Each row is a role archetype, not a single player. A player can move between archetypes as their role changes; the desk tracks the move.

Balls faced: 12–30. Strike rate range: 120–180. Floor: moderate; ceiling: very high.

The opportunity index, explained

An opportunity index is a single number that summarises how much of a role’s expected contribution a player is likely to receive. Three inputs: expected batting position (more balls = higher opportunity), overs phase (powerplay vs. death changes ceiling), and fielding involvement (catches, run-outs). The index is not a forecast of runs or wickets; it is a forecast of opportunity.

Use the opportunity index to compare players in the same role. A 25-year-old opener with expected position 2 and 4 catches per match has a higher opportunity index than a 33-year-old opener with expected position 1 and 1 catch per match, all else equal.

Role stability vs. last-match form

Role stability is how often a player holds the same role across matches. Last-match form is what they did in their most recent match. Both matter, but role stability matters more: a player who held the same role for the last 8 matches has a more predictable contribution than a player who scored 50 last match but has played 4 different roles in the last 6.

How do you measure role stability?

We track the player’s role in each match for the last 8–10 matches. A high stability score means the role has been consistent; a low score means it has shifted.

Is the opportunity index available for every player?

No. We publish an opportunity index for players we have covered across at least 5 matches in the current season. Below that, the index is not statistically meaningful.

How to read a player profile

A clean player profile has four sections: role archetype, recent form, opportunity index, and role stability. The role archetype tells you the floor and ceiling of the fantasy contribution. The recent form tells you whether the player is trending up or down. The opportunity index tells you whether the player is likely to receive the role’s expected contribution. The role stability tells you whether the role is likely to hold.

Role mobility — what it tells you

Role mobility is the inverse of role stability: how often a player changes role across matches. A high-mobility player is moving into new roles (good) or being asked to fill in (bad); the trend direction matters. The desk tracks mobility in two buckets: ascending mobility (moving into higher-impact roles) and descending mobility (filling in for an injured player). Ascending mobility is usually a positive signal; descending mobility is usually a yellow flag.

The form window

A form window is the number of recent matches you consider when assessing form. The desk’s default is 5 matches for trend assessment and 10 matches for role-stability assessment. A 1-match window (the most recent match only) is unreliable; a 20-match window is too slow to react to recent changes. The 5-match window is the most useful for captaincy decisions; the 10-match window is the most useful for role-board decisions.

Cross-league form

Cross-league form (form in another T20 league) is sometimes useful for IPL squad players who appear in bilateral series or overseas leagues. Treat cross-league form as a hint, not as a primary input; the conditions and the role mix differ enough that a direct transfer of form is unreliable. The desk uses cross-league form only when the IPL form window is too short.

A bowler-mix frame

A bowler-mix frame is a small mental model that helps you choose between bowler archetypes. The frame: at least one powerplay specialist, at least one middle-overs spinner, at least one death-overs specialist. A lineup that lacks any of these is fragile against a smart opponent. A lineup that has two of any one is overweighted and exposes you to role concentration. The frame is not a rule; it is a starting point.

The injury-watch flag

An injury-watch flag is a yellow flag on a player profile: the player is fit to play but managing a minor injury. A yellow flag does not mean the player is out; it means the player’s contribution may be lower than usual. The desk tracks injury-watch flags on the player profile and re-checks before each match. A player who has been on injury-watch for 3+ consecutive matches is usually a flag for reduced role or rest; treat the captain frame accordingly.

Player vs. role — the trade-off

A player-vs-role trade-off is the choice between picking a specific player and picking a role archetype. Player picks win when the player’s form is clearly trending up; role picks win when the role mix is the bottleneck. The desk recommends role picks as the default and player picks as the deliberate exception. A lineup built entirely from player picks is fragile against a role change; a lineup built entirely from role picks is robust against form variance.
